This year marks Frost Valley’s fiftieth year in the Catskill Mountains of New York. For a camp with that many years of history behind it (as well as the years it spent as Camp Wawayanda in New Jersey), there is only so much paraphernalia that can be held on to each year. But Windsong village (fifteen year-old girls) had the opportunity to archive Frost Valley history with Al Filreis. Al is not only a former camper, counselor, VC (Village Chief) and Director, but now serves as a trustee and alumni volunteer whose own two children are at camp- one as a camper, one as a counselor. Al gave the girls access to old pictures, song lyrics, newsletters, staff shirts and other assorted items. The girls spent the afternoon making note of the items the camp had, as well as inquiring with Al about differences between camp then and now. One camper photographed old staff shirts, while others excitedly scrutinized photos of the original meal grace banner, comparing it with the one they use daily. They were visited by Jerry Huncosky, the CEO of Frost Valley, who asked their opinions on various facets of camp, eager for their input on its future. For an afternoon, the girls not only looked through history but created their own.
