Digital Hoopla: There was a little froggy!

We starting something new on the blog.  In addition to all the pictures, stories, videos, and events we’ll be adding all long, we are also adding sounds as well.

Our first mp3 is from our Digital Hoopla Series.  Here is Lakota and Outpost passionately yelling “There was a little froggy!”  Feel free to download the file and add it to your iPod!

There was a little froggy!
Sitting on a log!
He rooted for the other team, he had no sense at all!
He fell into the water!
Bumped his little head!
And when he came above the water this is what he said:

Go, go, go,
go Lakota/Outpost

Fight, fight, fight,
fight Lakota/Outpost

Win, win, win,
win Lakota/Outpost

Go, fight, win!
Bash their little faces in!

Summer 2010 Staff: Rebecca!

blog We are excited to have Rebecca back for her fourth summer working Lakota village!

Rebecca is currently a sophomore at Quinnipiac University studying communications and marketing.

Some of her favorite parts of camp are  “making s’mores with the campers on the overnights, waterfront, time spent with just the village, and the happiness and familiarity that comes with hooplah.”

Rebecca’s favorite value is respect.  She believes “you have to earn respect of others” and is a key part of all relationships.

Some of her fondest camp memories will always be at Olympix as well as enjoying the rain by playing in the mud.

We can’t wait to share with you all of the staff coming back this summer!

40 years of Hirdstock!

Yesterday was our 40th anniversary of Hirdstock!

Back in 1969 when Woodstock was occurring only 45 minutes away, the entire camp (campers & staff!) wanted to attend the event.  Of course the camp director couldn’t allow it, so Frost Valley YMCA did the second best thing.  They brought the concert to the Valley.  Since that year, every 4th session there has been a Hirdstock.

Yesterday’s event was a great way to celebrate the 40 years of peace and love.   Since all of camp was together, we uploaded a seperate gallery full of Hirdstock pictures.  Please click here to view the pictures at our SmugMug site.  The same password applies to all of the galleries.

Coolin’ Off

img_1058

Today was a very hot day in the Valley…. what better activity to take advantage of than waterfront?!

The campers had a great time lauching each other (shown above), as well as climbing the iceberg. It was a great way to cool off from the beating sun and take a few moments to splash around.

Phenomenal Woman, That’s Me!

img_1010On Sunday all the female Hird villages got together for Phenomenal Woman Day – named after the Maya Angelou poem. It began with a huge game of “Step In, Step Out” in which counselors called out different items (such as “if you play sports” or “if you have ever been talked about behind your back by a friend”) and campers (by choice) can take a step into the circle. It is an activity meant to create comraderie between any group, where they can see that they are not the only one who experiences whatever it is being called out.

After that, they split into mixed-age groups and talked about different issues they face in their lives as women.

It was the first time we have seen this done on such a large scale, and it was well executed — it’s always great to remind our campers of how phenomenal we really think they are!
